Want To Feel Better? Read This.
It's hard to see past what we're feeling in the moment. In fact, it can seem darn near impossible depending upon the feeling and it's intensity. The danger in this is that when we get stuck in a feeling that's not constructive - can keep us in a place that doesn't serve us.
I've got Manhattan playing in the background as I write this. It's one of my favorite old New York/Woody Allen films. I watch it to reminisce and to feel sentimental. There was a simplicity to the city then, in the 70's and 80's, that I don't think we can enjoy now. I'm not totally sure whether that's good or bad but I must admit I often miss a world without the internet or cell phones. A time when you sat in a restaurant and there was no smartphone to divert your attention to. You just.. had to e there. Whether it was with yourself or with another person. If you were alone you could read a book or write or just get lost in your thoughts. Your point of view of the world was informed less by media and more from your own observations. The barriers to entry in most industries were higher. Sometimes this was good, sometimes not so good. Good when it helped to elevate people's game and bad when it kept talented people who should have gotten noticed, out. But I digress...
I want you to feel better if you're not feeling so great. If you're feeling great - awesome. Keep on, keeping on. If not, know this... There was a time in my life when I consistently didn't feel great. That's a bit of an understatement. There as a time when I felt horrible for days and weeks at a time. Sure, there were glimpses of relief here and there but the disempowering feelings tended to remain predominant. What changed??
I stopped focusing on what I didn't have and started focusing on what I did. I chose to fill myself with gratitude every day. I know, I know, I know - you've heard it before. More than likely from me! But answer me this: How magical is your life right now? How great is it to be alive? It's September, one of the most magical months of the year. A time for new beginnings. I want to invite you to embrace all that you have and want to be. I want you to embrace all you're not and won't be. It's all you and it's all beautiful. No matter how insurmountable the future might look, it's not. All you have to do is have a little faith in people. And that starts with having some in yourself. If that's too hard to do just pretend like you do and act accordingly. Choose to embrace action. A great movie is made of one great scene after another. Those great scenes always begin by the director calling "action." It's the same thing in life. With each day you have a chance at a new scene in your life. Choose action towards where your passions lie. Choose action towards effecting the lives of others in some positive way. All that's left is to allow yourself to be open to all those wonderfully intoxicating feelings that will come as a result of those two very simple acts.
What are you excited about for this Fall? I'd love to hear about it.
